Korission Lagoon

The Korissia lagoon, or Korissia, is located on the southwest coast of Corfu and is the largest wetland on the island. Its direction is from the northwest to the southeast, parallel to the coastline. Its shape is elongated, with a length of 5.3 km and a maximum width of 1.5 km. It covers an area of ​​4,300 acres and its coastlines extend to 12 km. The lagoon is separated from the sea by a narrow strip of sand, 6 km long and 50 to 750 meters wide, which extends from Alonaki bay, in the area of ​​Gardiki, to Cape Konsta and Issos beach in Agios Georgios. The Korissia lagoon is the largest protected area in Corfu as it is part of the Natura 2000 protection network.
