The Byzantine castle Gardiki, south of Agios Mattheos, is a historical monument (YPPOA / GDAPK / DVMA / TACHMAE / 64590/39825/2108/796 / 11.03.2014, FEK / 108 / AAP / 02.04.2014). Its construction dates back to the times when Corfu was annexed to the Despotate of Epirus (1214-1267) and may be related to the adjacent water source and the control of the neighboring lagoon of Korissia. The castle of Gardiki declined after the subjugation of the island to Venice (1386). Recent archaeological research has brought to light evidence of the use of the site since antiquity. Inside the castle was discovered a gifted burial of an infant in an amphora (infiltration) of the 6th c. BC, enclosure with burials of Late Roman-Early Christian times and endless tiled roof tombs.
